Matching into residency in your desired specialty at your top choice program is a competitive process. You're trying so hard to pass your classes and get good evaluations from clinical preceptors, so it's no wonder you feel overwhelmed trying to get leadership positions and research experience to strengthen your application. Writing a personal statement is in the back of your mind, and chances are you haven't made substantial updates to your CV since you started medical school (or even opened it up at all).

Here's the secret to maximizing your success throughout your medical education journey: marketing yourself well.

Think about this. A strong CV/resume going into medical school sets you up for pursuing opportunities like serving in leadership roles, finding research mentors, and applying to away rotations. Those opportunities help further strengthen your CV with high-quality experiences that make you stand out when applying to residency (and beyond). You can't do anything about what experiences you already have (or don't have), but there is still so much you can do now to market yourself better to work on pursuing new experiences to add to your CV.

A CV isn’t just a formality—it’s your foundation.

When done right, your CV can open doors before you apply to residency. It helps you to

  • Secure competitive away rotations

  • Connect with research mentors

  • Land leadership positions

  • Strengthen letters of recommendation and your ERAS application

You may have struggled with writing a strong CV in the past. You may have felt like you spent so much time searching for what your CV needs to include online and wasted hours trying to figure out the right wording for your experiences on your own. But it's not your fault; most medical schools are not teaching these skills, and the ones that are teaching professional development often use frameworks that aren't specific to the field of medicine. It's common to end up with "good enough" CV, but luckily you've came to the right place to learn how to go from mediocre to exceptional.

An improved CV will significantly enhance your chances of standing out to secure competitive away rotations in your chosen specialty and hospital system. Your CV can be crafted to standout and showcase academic achievements and relevant experiences that paint a fuller picture of who you are to programs.

Let's look at an example: orthopedic surgery, one of the most competitive specialties. A study shows that completing an away rotation increases your chances of matching at the institution you rotated at by 50%. If you want the best chance to get into your first choice program in your preferred specialty, it is essential to optimize your CV.

A polished CV conveys your passion and readiness for the rigors of your rotations. It's not just about fourth year away rotations either; a strong CV will set you apart when submitting it for research and leadership opportunities, letters of recommendation, chair letters, and eventually ERAS applications.

About your Instructor

Hi, my name is Dr. Aubrey Ann Jackson!

I am currently a psychiatry resident physician at Drexel University/Tower Health in Philadelphia, PA and the host of First Line, a medical education podcast. I have several years of experience helping medical students apply to residency. I’ve worked with hundreds of individuals, so I know what it takes to craft a strong CV. My clients have had amazing results, and I created this course to make my proven framework more accessible.

I am originally from Montgomery County outside of Philadelphia. Since I was a child, I have been very type A and would describe myself as a grammar nerd and perfectionist. (I am an Enneagram 1.) In high school, I competed in Academic Decathlon at the national level, which gave me a strong foundation in essay writing, interviewing, and delivering speeches.

I then attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA where I majored in biology and political science. I also worked as a professional writer and editor for several companies, including DemiDec and Decademy. I took advantage of many professional development, networking, and leadership opportunities, getting involved in student government,
grassroots activism, and the co-op program, which provided me with a well-rounded experience and an understanding about how to market oneself in the best
possible light. I was always the person my friends would ask to review their CVs and application essays for jobs or graduate school.

Weeks after I married my husband in 2019, I moved to Virginia to attend Liberty University
College of Osteopathic Medicine, my first-choice medical school. While there, I started First Line to speak about my experiences as a medical student. My most listened-to episodes have been about my experience applying to away rotations and residency. As a fourth-year student, I returned to my editing roots by offering to review CVs for students from my medical school, and their successes encouraged me to launch freelancing editing services on fiverr. As I started psychiatry residency, I quickly gained traction with my side-gig, which grew into a multi-5-figure business thanks to the overwhelming positive reviews and high referral rate.

After working with hundreds of students, I noticed patterns and common pitfalls. I realized
that students need a framework to craft a CV from the front end. This was my inspiration to launch this course, and I am so excited to provide my expertise to even more students than I could ever work with one-on-one. I am so happy you are here; I am so confident that my course is going to set you up for success for medical school, residency applications, and beyond.
